Stunning Argillite Rattle

Freddie Wilson was born in Queen Charlotte City, Haida Gwaii in October 1983.

His Haida name is Skundaal, and he is from the Raven clan. He is the son of established Haida argillite carver Cooper Wilson, and is the brother of Haida artist Donnie Edenshaw. He had early success with his argillite carvings and four of his pieces were included in an art show at the Masters Gallery in Calgary in May, 2005, when he was only twenty-one. He was included in an additional show at the Masters in June 2008 and he was also featured in Carol Sheehan’s book, Breathing Stone, Contemporary Haida Argillite Sculpture in the same year.

Wilson divides his time between Vancouver and Haida Gwaii and he works in both traditional and non-traditional forms. For example, he carved a miniature argillite skateboard with trade-bead wheels, and a Chinese flying dragon with a red tongue carved from catlinite. According to his notes, he made two rattles before 2005. He now works in a variety of media including carving wood and metal as well as making screen prints.

The rattle does make a light sound when gently shaken.
